Banderas’ Heritage

Share

In her article about Antonio Banderas, Lorenza Munoz refers to him as “Latino” (“Banderas Is ‘Crazy’ About His New Gig,” Oct. 27). Call it a question of semantics, but Banderas is a native of Spain, which makes him Spanish and/or Hispanic. He may have Moorish origins, too, since the Moors were in Spain for several centuries.

However, “Latino” refers to those of us whose origins lie in Latin America (Mexicans, Costa Ricans, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, etc.). Most Latinos are mestizos, a combination of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the Spanish conquerors.
