Freebury Wins Title, Waves Finish Second

Rebecca Freebury became the second Pepperdine woman to win the West Coast Conference cross-country title by clocking 18:18 on the 5,000-meter course at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

The Waves placed four runners in the top 30 and finished second behind Portland.

Pepperdine’s finish was the best by the Waves since 1993, which helped Dick Kampmann earn conference coach of the year honors.

Kim McElhinney won an individual conference championship for Pepperdine in 1989.

Portland has won four consecutive WCC women’s championships.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 8, Corona Del Mar 6--Mike Gross and Brian Hult each scored three goals and the Wolverines won in double overtime during the third round of the John Felix Memorial tournament at San Jose Bellarmine.

Harvard-Westlake (17-5) is ranked No. 5 in the Division I Southern Section poll and Corona Del Mar is ranked No. 2 in Division II.

MEN’S SOCCER

Redlands 2, Cal Lutheran 1--Andy O’Shay scored in the 87th minute to give the Bulldogs a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Cal Lutheran.

O’Shay scored while Cal Lutheran (11-7, 8-4) played a man down after Glenn Winslow was ejected with a red card. There were five yellow cards assessed, three to Cal Lutheran players, two to Redlands (13-2-1, 10-1-1).

Kyle Brazell scored his fourth goal on an assist from Andrew Montenegroto give the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Jared Grondin scored in the 55th minute for Redlands.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Pepperdine 5, CS Fullerton 1--Freshman Tasha Spangler, an All-Southern Section selection at Westlake High, scored two goals for the Waves in a nonconference match at Pepperdine.

Stacia Spangler scored as Pepperdine (9-6-1) built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Cal State Fullerton is 6-12-1.
