A lock-down was in force Wednesday at Pelican Bay State Prison after a riot involving 200 of California’s toughest inmates.

A female guard at the maximum-security prison 290 miles north of San Francisco suffered a fractured cheekbone and needed surgery, said prison spokesman Lt. Ben Grundy.

Three inmates were also hurt in Tuesday’s rioting, in which guards fired tear gas and rubber bullets. The inmate who attacked the guard has been placed in isolation. His name was not released as authorities consider whether to file charges.

“He hit her with his fist and we may have the attack on video,” Grundy said. “We also have witnesses.”

Pelican Bay houses 3,400 inmates, mostly in maximum-security buildings. There are 800 prisoners in Facility B, where the riot took place. Inmates are sent to Pelican Bay when they are involved in violence at other prisons.
