If the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees meet in the playoffs, Oakland Manager Art Howe knows who to send to the mound.

Omar Olivares pitched a six-hitter to defeat Roger Clemens for the second time in a month, and Ben Grieve drove in four runs in Oakland’s 7-1 victory Wednesday night.

“He’s been near perfect for us,” Howe said of Olivares, who is 5-0 since joining the A’s in a July 29 trade with the Angels. “He certainly has responded to the challenge and pitched great baseball since he got here. I hope he’s trying to send a message that he wants to stay here.”

Olivares (13-9), who entered this season with an 8.15 ERA against the Yankees, is 3-1 with a 2.02 ERA against New York in 1999.

The A’s are 4-2 on their current seven-game trip and remain two games behind Boston in the AL wild-card race.
