VENTURA COUNTY ROUNDUP : OXNARD : 4th-Grader Wins Top Honors in Contest

Nancy Cahua, a fourth-grader at Lemonwood Elementary School, has been named winner of a $7,500 scholarship, as well as a new computer and $2,000 in software for the Carnegie Court campus.

She received the first-place award from the Dare to Dream--Expect to Succeed national scholarship competition. Hers was among 10,000 entries nationwide, said Joseph Galluccio, president of Brainstorm USA, an Atlanta-based educational software marketer and competition sponsor.

Jessani Solorzano, a sixth-grade student at Frank Intermediate School, entered the competition as a fifth-grader at Lemonwood and received the second-place award of a new computer and $2,000 in educational software for her personal use.

Students were asked to write an essay and create a visual arts project depicting their dream and how they expect to achieve it. Nancy has dreams of becoming an astronaut, Jessani of owning her own accounting firm.

“A total of 19 winners were selected nationwide and, of the competition’s six top winners, five are from California,” said Pat Snook, spokeswoman for Brainstorm USA.

The awards will be presented to the students Sept. 21 at the school.
