A LITTLE HISTORY

With the Times All-Orange County football team marking its 40th anniversary this season, here is a selection of prominent all-county choices from Golden West League schools:

Darryl Berg

Westminster, 1968

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Berg was named the county’s back of the year, in recognition of his all-around skills. He averaged 7.6 yards per rushing attempt, caught 26 passes, scored 10 touchdowns and passed for two others.

Dan Clearwater

Ocean View, 1979

A 5-foot-11, 215-pound offensive guard, Clearwater bench-pressed 400 pounds and was explosive off the line. He is the lone Seahawk to be named to the all-county team.

Oscar Wilson

Santa Ana, 1987-89

Wilson was a three-time all-county selection, leading the Saints to Century League championships in each of those years. The 6-3, 235-pound defensive lineman was lineman of the year as a senior and had 16 sacks as a junior.

1998 IN REVIEW

The League Race: With one week to go, five schools were within one game of first place, with Servite and Tustin emerging as co-champions. Servite defeated Tustin, 28-14, during the eighth week, but was forced to share the title after being upset by Westminster the following week, 34-23.

Game of the Year: Carlos Rangel’s 26-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play gave Saddleback a 51-48 victory over Westminster during the seventh week, overshadowing the performance of Westminster’s Kelly Coburn. The Lion quarterback completed 20 of 35 passes for 466 yards and seven touchdowns.

Play of the Year: Tustin’s Marcus Burrell knocked down a Coburn pass in the end zone in the final seconds to stop a Westminster comeback and ensure a 24-20 Tiller victory that clinched a share of the league title.

The MVP: Matt Gogan, Servite’s all-purpose running back, who finished second in the league in both rushing yardage and receptions.

Playoff performance: Servite knocked off Corona del Mar and Villa Park before falling in a semifinal, 31-7, to eventual champion Woodbridge. Tustin rolled to a 71-28 first-round victory over neighborhood rival Foothill, before losing to Santa Margarita. Saddleback lost in the first round.
