Jurors completed their first day of deliberations Thursday in the trial of NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who faces up to 18 months in jail if convicted of making terrorist threats against his wife.

The eight men and four women will resume their discussions today in Hollywood Municipal Court.

Brown, 63, is charged with threatening to kill his wife and smashing her car with a shovel during a quarrel at their Hollywood Hills home on June 15. Monique Brown, 25, told police that her husband threatened to “snap her neck,” and said he had assaulted her several times during their two-year marriage.

Days after that tearful call to 911 and talks with Los Angeles Police Department detectives, she recanted her claims and demanded that the charges be dropped. In court, she told the jury that she made up the story because she suspected Brown was having an affair and wanted to hurt him.

Prosecutors contend she was telling the truth originally, and that her husband intimidated her and persuaded her to withdraw the accusations.
