Huntington Park
* Re “Part-Time City Council Votes Itself 160% Raise,” Sept. 8:
The actions of the Huntington Park City Council members to deliberately bypass state law and the voters to give themselves a 160% pay raise are reflections of their true interests. The council members have stolen badly needed funding that would otherwise benefit their constituency. While this small city has a growing crime rate, a high dropout rate, a growing backlog of deferred capital improvements and a misled electorate, the council members forgot the line in their job description that says “to serve the public interest.”
Now that members of the Huntington Park City Council have begun to pay themselves a salary higher than that of the dogcatchers, they have created a market for more-qualified council members. Maybe now the people who are better qualified to govern will take a second look at how this city government is out of control and will try to get it back on track.
