When Creating an Ensemble for Housekeeping, Think Versatility

Dear Fashion Police: What is the most comfortable garb for a homemaker to wear in the course of a day while performing household tasks like cleaning and shopping? And also interacting with other people and animals, such as pets or wildlife or strays?

Dear Vous: Let’s see, what would be the perfect outfit to wear to scrub a bathtub and then go rescue an escaped anaconda in the backyard? Hmmm. Do you have anything that’s Lycra and steel mesh?

If you don’t, here are two things to remember: cotton and stretch. Choose cotton because it breathes, and stretch because . . . it, well, stretches.

It shouldn’t be difficult to find these kinds of pants, they’re all over the place. The fabric will allow you to move without restriction, and the pants will still retain their shape. Look for a cut that’s not too tight, and aim for dark colors such as black, navy and olive. Stay away from white, beige, stone and khaki, unless you like the look of stains.

As for tops, go for knits instead of wovens, such as Oxford cloth. Knits stretch more and also tend to wrinkle less. T-shirts, cardigans, sleeveless tops--whatever suits you, as long as it’s not too ratty.

For those times you venture outside, keep a neutral-colored sweater, jacket or oversized tailored shirt on hand. You’ll look more pulled together.

If you wear sneakers around the house, we advise ditching them when you’re in public and wearing some cute sandals or ballerina flats instead.

If you’re dealing with stray or wild animals, we must caution you--duh--that no clothing, save a suit of armor, is going to protect you from scratches or bites. But maybe the Lycra will help you run faster.
