The San Fernando Valley Bar Assn. will swear in its new president Saturday.

Attorney Mark Blackman will take office during a gala dinner at the Warner Center Marriott. Blackman is a partner in the Encino law firm Alpert & Barr, for which he practices bankruptcy law, creditors’ rights and business and real estate litigation.

Blackman, 38, of Woodland Hills, said he is working with the courts to create a program providing free legal services for people who can’t afford them. The project would help people pay for bankruptcies, simple divorces and small claims, he said.

The program would also help improve the image of lawyers, Blackman said.

“There’s an image that lawyers are out there only for themselves,” said Blackman, who has a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a J.D. from Loyola Law School, “but most lawyers put time in with charitable organizations.”

Blackman will be sworn in during a 7 p.m. ceremony. It will be followed by an event to raise money for the association’s “Blanket the Homeless” program, which provides homeless people and battered women and children with blankets, first aid kits and other essentials. Tickets are $75. For more information, call (818) 227-0490.
