* On Sept. 10 I read “Assembly OKs Child Support Department,” concerning the need by the state of California to create a new department because the district attorneys in the state don’t do their jobs. On the same day was “Board Considers a $51,000 Hike for D.A.,” concerning the “need” by our often-wrong, never-listening L.A. County Board of Supervisors to give Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti a raise. Something smells real bad here.

The cost of yet another department in the state government is mind-numbing. Given that necessity, the district attorneys and their staffs should have their pay cut severely, not raised. And given the fact that on this and many other occasions, the county supervisors have demonstrated their complete lack of concern for the wants and needs of the local population, they too should take a pay cut. A big one.

* Re “Supervisors Approve $51,878 Pay Raise for District Attorney,” Sept. 15: If Garcetti’s pay is out of line with other countywide officeholders, it seems more reasonable, considering the state of county government, to reduce the pay of the other countywide officeholders.
