Welfare Extensions

Re “Ventura County Extends Aid to Some Recipients,” Sept. 9.

I agree with Jere Robings that welfare recipients will milk the system for as long as they can.

Did the county of Ventura ask the taxpayers if they wanted to extend the welfare cutoff deadline? Maybe the taxpayers would have liked to put the extra money from the bulging treasury toward educating welfare recipients so they can learn a skill and go out and get a job. They would not have an excuse for being on welfare.

I don’t know about other taxpayers but I know that I am sick and tired of seeing welfare recipients using food stamps to buy junk food. I’m really tired of seeing them leave the grocery store and drive away in a better car than mine. What really sets me off is that they are getting a free ride and the taxpayers are paying for it.

When the welfare system was set up it was only intended for people who fell on hard times, not for people to make a living off of it. Two years should be long enough.

So I say to Ventura County, no more extensions. When welfare recipients have to go to homeless shelters to eat, sleep and shower, I guarantee you they will go look for a job. It’s time to stop spoon-feeding them and let them pay for the system instead of always taking from it.
