Sparkling Bowl Finale

Share

Don Heckman may have been only impressed with the pyrotechnics at the Hollywood Bowl’s “Party of the Century” finale, but the audience and our gang were superbly entertained by the whole program (“Sparklers, Duds at Fireworks Finale,” Sept. 20).

Heckman’s objection to Ann Miller singing Sondheim’s “I’m Still Here” is a puzzlement. The song was an anthem to Miller’s own career in Hollywood and absolutely appropriate. He also dismissed Lea DeLaria as having a “modest talent.” Sure. That’s why she was nominated for a Tony Award for her work in “On the Town.” I agree that Alan Cumming was a bit over his head doing “Being Alive,” but he had guts.

My husband and I were thrilled with the entire program. And seeing our marvelous Mayor Riordan having a bit of fun conducting was just that: fun!
