The evolving relationship between Catholics and Jews will be the subject of a panel discussion Wednesday to be convened by Rabbi Harold Schulweis and Cardinal Roger M. Mahony.

Six panelists will discuss Jewish and Catholic attitudes, the Holocaust, and the interpretation of Christian Scripture free of anti-Semitism. An interfaith ceremony to express optimism and hope will be held after the discussion.

Panelists include Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, western regional director of the American Jewish Committee; Sister Gretchen Hailer, a Catholic consultant on adult faith formation; Father Patrick Mullen, New Testament professor at St. John’s Seminary; Father Alfred S. Burnham, former head of the Los Angeles archdiocese’s office of ecumenical and inter-religious affairs; Daniel Smith-Christopher, professor of Hebrew Scriptures at Loyola Marymount University; and Father Michael Wakefield, pastor of St. Euphrasia Church and co-chairman of the dialogue between priests and rabbis.
