Dodger Fans Simply Want Something

Share

I am always amazed by the ability of Dodger “suits” to gauge not only what the public wants, but what they need as well. Dodger official Fred Coons states (presumably with a straight face), “Fans don’t want you to raise prices, they don’t want you to introduce suites and they want you to field a competitive team, but you can’t have all of those.” [“Revamping the Ravine,” Sept. 17]

Of course, the escalating prices are inevitable and the average fans will pay for them as they can. The luxury suites are not for the average fan, however, as only a corporation can afford them to woo potential clients and entertain existing ones. And, any real fan will tell you that the only thing that matters is winning. So, Mr. Coons, the fans may not want higher prices, but they will pay them (you win), the luxury suites are going in no matter what the demand (you win), and the Dodgers aren’t competitive (you win again!).

I guess Mr. Coons meant to say that fans can’t have any of those. I can’t speak for all fans, but I would settle for only the last one if I can’t have all of those.

Mike Scioscia has not only been a model for dignity and class, but also wisdom. Upon his departure from the Dodgers, he states, “I think this is a good time to explore other opportunities. . . . The Dodgers are set right now in the direction the organization is going.”

Mike Scioscia is wise enough to know that the only direction the Dodgers are going is down.

So, Don Sutton [Sept. 19] is upset that Fox swallowed up the Dodgers. His hand-wringing about corporate ownership would be more credible if he turned down his paycheck from the Time Warner-owned Atlanta Braves and Time Warner-owned Turner Sports.

Go ahead and trash Fox, justifiably, for the Piazza deal, a disaster by any measure (except for a Mets’ fan like me). But maybe Sutton’s nostalgia for his old team blinded him to this reality: The Dodgers were already a badly constructed also-ran when O’Malley and Claire were still in charge.

Don Sutton is right. The Dodgers have no “charm, class and elegance.”

But for Sutton to lump himself in with those who do possess those qualities is laughable.

Sutton was, is, and always will be an arrogant, classless and selfish jerk.

There’s a hole in the ozone layer, serial killers are breeding like rats and the corner Mexican-food joint inadvertently put sour cream on my veggie burrito. I have the answer to these and the rest of mankind’s ills--let’s trade Eric Karros! Sure, trade the best player--remember how well that worked when we traded that catcher?

Here’s the Big Blue cure: Let’s sit Davey Johnson himself down every other week for no apparent reason. Bring back Tommy Lasorda and keep bringing him back until he dies happily in the dugout in about another 30 years. Or Scioscia. At least we’ll have someone who has a clue about Dodger Blue and not another clueless carpetbagger.
