Tour Plane Crash Kills 10 in Hawaii
A sightseeing airplane crashed high on the flanks of the Mauna Loa Volcano, killing all 10 aboard.
Crews combing a jagged patch of lava recovered the bodies of nine people from Saturday’s crash.
By late afternoon Sunday, the body of the 10th victim had not been found. The search for the remaining victim was expected to continue at daybreak today.
The pilot and passengers have not been identified, but officials said five females and five males were aboard. KHNL-TV quoted the American Red Cross as saying six were from the U.S. mainland, two were from Australia and one was from Europe.
The cause of the crash was not immediately clear. National Transportation Safety Board investigators were scheduled to arrive today.
The twin-engine plane operated by Big Island Air had taken off from Kona at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Its last contact with the flight control tower was at 5:21 p.m.
