The Oakley sunglasses factory will replace loud outdoor machinery this week after months of complaints about noise from nearby residents in Portola Hills.

Oakley’s air-filtering equipment meets city noise standards, but residents complained that the equipment emits a disturbing, high-pitched whine 24 hours a day.

An Oakley spokesman said the new equipment will not be as loud and will make a less high-pitched sound.

Oakley also could build sound walls or take other measures to lessen noise, city officials said.
