Recycled Designs Bear Fruit Here

There aren’t that many places where you can outfit your living room, home office and college dorm in one stop. But then, there aren’t that many stores like Orange.

Owner Marne Dupere, who chose the L.A. store’s name based on her favorite color, refinishes office supplies and industrial-strength accessories that she retrieves from hospitals, schools and office buildings that are closing. It’s safe to say they never dreamed their drab metal trash cans and file cabinets would end up red or turquoise, but Dupere’s idea of reconditioning is far from standard issue. Recent finds include a child’s desk converted to a coffee table and a file cabinet with 60 “official document” drawers that she made into a magazine rack.

Her experience as an executive for Esprit--the young, fun fashion company--is definitely showing in her new store. Custom-made items at Orange run from silver-leather beanbag chairs to vintage Knoll sofas upholstered in fake fur. Prices range from $65 for desk accessories to $2,000 or more for vintage sofas.
