Lawmakers Work to Act on Justices’ Probe

A crisis involving allegations of ethics violations at New Hampshire’s Supreme Court in Concord kept lawmakers at work during the weekend, researching impeachment procedures or trying to arrange a less drastic solution. While some tried to persuade Chief Justice David Brock to resign and avoid a protracted and damaging legislative battle, others questioned whether a clean sweep of the court wouldn’t be better. Atty. Gen. Philip McLaughlin, in a report, said it was an “institutional practice” for judges who had excused themselves from cases to review and discuss draft decisions in those cases.
