2,200 People Contact State Over Kin in Closed Cemetery

Share

More than 2,200 people with family members buried at the now-closed Woodlawn Cemetery have contacted the state Department of Consumer Affairs seeking information about their loved ones’ remains.

State officials closed the 120-year-old cemetery last week after finding evidence that cemetery officials may have been selling burial plots, despite having no more available land. To make room, cemetery workers are suspected of disinterring bodies and improperly reburying them.

State officials have said they believe the improprieties involved only a small number of graves on the 25-acre site. Their investigation is expected to continue for several weeks.

Meanwhile, distraught family members have been calling the consumer affairs department and visiting a temporary state office set up at Compton City Hall.
