* Now Vice President Al Gore is playing politics with Elian Gonzalez (March 31). He no doubt thinks he can gain votes by siding with the Cuban immigrants. He certainly lost my vote by his action. He revealed a part of his character that I certainly don’t like. The actions of Gore and the Miami Cubans are all selfish, self-seeking behaviors.

* Any trauma suffered by Elian’s return to his father has been caused by his Cuban relatives. Does anyone believe that 6-year-old made up the fantasy that his mother has lost her memory and is still in Miami? Six-year-olds do not even understand the word “amnesia.”

* I am interested in knowing how many of the people who advocate Elian’s return to Cuba would make that trip in his place?

* Cuban immigrants are already exempt from severe immigration restrictions applying to the rest of the world. Are they now to be exempt from the rule of law in this country? We love to preach respect for the law of the land to criminals and noncriminals alike. How are we to explain to them that Cuban Americans are above our laws? It doesn’t help to see the craven manner in which our government seeks to placate the Cuban lobby. It’s time that Cuban Americans be made subject to the same laws governing the rest of us. Elian belongs with his father. That’s the law.
