Evans Hotels, developer of the proposed Newport Dunes resort, will make a counteroffer that includes most of the cuts made by the Planning Commission last week but insists on an extra 6,000 square feet of conference space.

The company already has spent $1.5 million on the $100-million hotel project and is eager to find some sort of compromise. But if it means strangling its financial viability by reducing the conference space to a level that won’t attract business groups, then scrapping the project will be considered, said project manager Tim Quinn.

The conference space, which was originally proposed at 54,000 square feet, is intended to keep the number of registered guests up even during the off-season.
