Elian Gonzalez

I am disgusted by the blatant hypocrisy on the part the Cuban community in Miami. They say it would be cruel to return Elian Gonzalez to the hardships of living in Cuba. The Miami community is the very reason why the trade embargo against Cuba continues. Apparently the Cuban Americans care little about the millions of children in Cuba who would have a better life if the embargo were lifted.

The only person in Cuba aided by the embargo is Fidel Castro.

Has no one considered the precedent that would be set if Elian Gonzalez is allowed to stay in the U.S.? There must be at least a million children in countries with oppressive regimes who would have a better life in the United States. Are we going to tell them that if they can enter this country illegally they can stay? Are we going to tell the billion people in the world living under totalitarian governments who would have a better life in this country that they are welcome here? Do they have a right to live in this country? Are our immigration laws meaningless?
