Carl L. Sitter; Marine Won Medal of Honor in Korean War

Carl L. Sitter, 77, a retired Marine colonel who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman during the Korean War. A native of Syracuse, Mo., Sitter joined the Marines in 1939 and was in combat during World War II, winning the first of four Purple Hearts. Sitter’s Korean War gallantry came in action at Hagaru-ri in November 1950. Sitter’s company suffered heavy casualties and he was wounded in the face, arms and chest. According to his Medal of Honor citation, when the enemy began a counterattack during the night, Sitter visited each foxhole and gun position, “instilling in every man the will and determination to hold his position at all costs.” After 30 years in the service, Sitter was discharged in 1970 and took a job with the Virginia Department of Social Services. In recent months, he had been completing a course in preparation for the ministry. The cause of Sitter’s death was not announced. On April 4 at a hospital in Richmond, Va.
