Jefferson-Hemings Symposium Is Heated

A Richmond, Va., symposium on the relationship between President Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings turned to a war of words between a panel of historians and several skeptics in the audience. The 13 panelists agreed that results from a DNA test taken two years ago linked the Jefferson family to Hemings’ youngest son, Eston Hemings. But none said that Jefferson definitely fathered any of Hemings’ six children.
