COMMENTS

* THE DEPUTY pulled a bit under a long hold three deep early, settled outside a rival stalking the pace, bid three deep on the second turn, gained the lead straightening for home and gamely prevailed under urging.

* WAR CHANT was between horses early, stalked the leader off the rail into and on the first turn, bid outside that one on the backstretch, took a short advantage between rivals leaving the second turn, then fought back inside the winner through a stiff drive but could not quite match that one late.

* CAPTAIN STEVE was also between horses early, tracked the pace toward the inside, came out into the stretch, drifted out some in midstretch and picked up the show.

* ANEES was unhurried and angled in to save ground early, came off the rail on the backstretch, moved up outside on the second turn and into the stretch, was angled inward in deep stretch and lacked the necessary late kick.

* SURFSIDE had good early speed, inched away into the first turn, set a pressured pace inside, dropped back into the stretch and weakened.

* COCKY was four wide early, was allowed to settle in off rail, dropped back, failed to respond.
