Dorothy G. Lansing; Volunteer, Retired Teacher

Dorothy Grace Lansing, a retired substitute teacher and longtime Ventura resident, died Saturday after her third battle with cancer. She was 80.

She was born April 27, 1919, in Lakewood, Ohio. She grew up and attended school in Cleveland.

She was valedictorian of her class when she graduated in 1937 from John Marshall High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in 1941 from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in French at Western Reserve College.

She taught French and Spanish in Ohio public schools until she married William Lansing in 1946. They moved to California that year and to Ventura in 1954.

For 22 years, she was a substitute teacher in Ventura County public schools.

She was also active for 46 years with Community Presbyterian Church in Ventura, where she sang in the choir for 30 years, taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, served as deacon, and headed the sewing and service group. She was also a member of the church’s Chimes Circle and Church Women United.

After her retirement, she served for many years in the auxiliary of Ventura County Medical Center, where she worked in the gift shop.

Lansing loved to knit and made many sweaters, blankets and layettes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and gave many to charity. She also sewed quilts and clothing for people in need.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters Joan Regan and Betty Fitz-Patrick; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life is scheduled at 3 p.m. Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mark Patterson officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Community Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
