Screening Room: Assuming the Dodgers are not playing, on a Friday night I tend to have some close friends over to watch a movie. Sometimes on both Friday and Saturday, but it’s hard to find two movies I want to watch on a given weekend. The only time I ever go to a theater is if there’s a “Star Wars”-type movie.

For the Birds: The first thing I always do is read the papers. After that, I check on the fancy pigeons I raise--nuns and Helmets. Then my wife [songwriter Carole Bayer Sager] and I will go into Beverly Hills or someplace for lunch. A lot of times we go to La Scala and have some salad or pasta. At some point, I will go over and see my grandchildren--a little boy and a little girl.

Day of Rest: Sunday is my day that I don’t like to shave or dress up. I really like to veg out. We love “The Sopranos” and “The Practice,” and we watch those religiously. The only problem I have with “The Sopranos” is that it’s only 13 episodes.

First Pitch: I think I will be nervous on opening day, and it’ll have more to do with just making sure everything is going right. With the Dodger Stadium renovation that’s taken place, and with everything that is going on with 56,000 people here and knowing the way I am, it will be very hard to sit in one particular seat for a very long period of time. I’ll be checking on things and making sure that I feel comfortable about everything. I would say I’ll be a little hyper, to say the least.

Fanfare: Over the Christmas holiday, I went to a yogurt place in Malibu after lunch, and when I went to pay the woman, she looked me straight in the eye and said, “I’d give you this for nothing if you got back Mike Piazza.” I don’t think people relate to a corporation. They relate to an individual. And in my case, they also happen to be relating to somebody who’s a lifelong fan.
