The city’s water pumps on Berry Street work fine, but they haven’t been turned on for routine use in more than two years. State air-quality standards say the natural-gas-fueled engines kick out too much smog to operate.

But the city is working to put the pumps back in the business of moving potable water from the east end of the city to the west. The City Council voted to pump an extra $45,000 into Berry Street station improvements last week and expects to complete a $115,000 engine retooling program in the next two months.
