Housing Crisis

Share

* Re “Housing Is More Than Shelter,” Commentary, April 11: Fernando Guerra was correct in saying that we are facing a housing crisis in the city of Los Angeles. However, I would go further to say that we are facing a much bigger crisis in inner-city low-income housing in Los Angeles. We seem to spend more time vilifying and punishing landlords than addressing the problem of how we got into this mess.

The fact remains that we live in a capitalist society and the only way to cure our housing crisis, be it low-income or not, is to build incentives in the form of tax breaks for individuals wanting to invest in such ventures. Also we need to be more realistic in dealing with federal programs such as Section 8, which is currently a landlord’s worst nightmare. The alternative is to continue with the status quo, and we all know where that has put us.

Liberals

* I must be missing something here. Why is it that liberals want to have a waiting period to get a gun but do not want a waiting period for a woman to get an abortion? I guess it’s just another perspective in the Socialist States of America.
