Cape May Memory

Reading Thomas Mills’ account of his visit to Cape May, N.J. (“Gingerbread-by-the-Sea,” March 26) brought back wonderful memories of my own visit back in 1993.
I stayed there for five days along with my aunt, two cousins, two 4-year-old boys and an 8-month-old. What an experience! We spent our days loafing around town: strolling down Washington Street, taking the trolley tour and visiting the lighthouse.
I was amazed that people actually lived in this fairy-tale place. It was summer, the height of tourist season, yet it didn’t feel crowded, and we didn’t feel rushed. Cape May did not disappoint; I felt as if I’d stepped into a movie back lot, only this was real and charming without being syrupy or overdone.
We spent our afternoons at the beach, basking in the warm Atlantic. The sun was so bright and strong that this native Southern Californian went home with an exceptional suntan. You should have seen the looks I got at work when people said “Wow! Where’d you get that great tan?” and I answered, “New Jersey.”
