A 2-year-old Santa Ana boy was in intensive care Sunday night after he walked out of his home and fell into the family swimming pool, a Santa Ana fire captain said.

The boy, Jose de la Pina, had slipped away from family members and trundled outside about 5:45 p.m., Capt. Randy Black said. The home is in the 2300 block of North Stacy Lane.

When the boy’s family noticed that he was no longer inside, they checked outside and found him floating in the pool. He was removed from the water and relatives immediately began resuscitation while receiving instructions from a Fire Department dispatcher over the phone, Black said. Black did not have information on whether the door was open or the pool fenced.

The boy was revived and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was conscious but in guarded condition in the hospital’s critical care unit.

Black credited both the boy’s relatives and the dispatcher helping to revive him.
