Teen Pregnancy
Re “Giving Girls a Second Chance,” April 5: While I applaud the efforts being made to educate troubled girls at Ramona High School in Boyle Heights, this question must be asked. Is having an infant care center where two-thirds of the students are mothers conducive to curbing teen pregnancy?
If a campus that offers free baby-sitting services is made so easily available, might this then foster an environment that makes it inviting to become a young mother?
Judging from the girls’ comments to each other about wanting a baby, I can’t help but think that this accommodation is a disservice to both the taxpayer and the would-be teen mothers who know they’ll have a safety net should they become pregnant.
