Eclectic Orange Is All Over the Place in ’00 With 28 Events

The Bale Folclorico da Bahia of Brazil and a sequel to last season’s “American Roadhouse” program join the lineup of the Eclectic Orange Festival 2000, sponsored by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

Bale Folclorico will dance a carnival program Nov. 24-26 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The “American Roadhouse” program will take place Nov. 18 at Linda’s Doll Hut in Anaheim.

Other newly announced events in the series, which will take place in various venues, include Robert Lepage’s one-man show, “Far Side of the Moon,” two free music-related films and a cabaret program by Ute Lemper, among others.

In its second year, the festival will total 28 presentations, 11 more than last year. Many events have been previously announced by these participating groups: the Orange County Performing Arts Center, the Philharmonic Society, Laguna Chamber Music Society, the Pacific Symphony, Pacific Chorale, Opera Pacific and the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

The new events:

* Oct. 22--Orange County Museum of Art, 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach, 2 and 3:30 p.m.: “Bach on Film.” Part of the BBC-TV Great Composers Series, this documentary, narrated by Kenneth Branaugh, explores the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Free. Presented by the Philharmonic Society.

* Oct. 26-28--Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine, 8 p.m.: Robert Lepage’s “Far side of the Moon,” a one-man performance by the Canadian theater artist, set to an original score by Laurie Anderson. West Coast premiere. $30 to $40. Presented by the Irvine Barclay.

* Oct. 27--8 p.m.; Oct. 29--4 p.m., St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews Drive, Newport Beach: William Hall Master Chorale sings Bach’s B-minor Mass. $15 to $40. Presented by the Hall Master Chorale.

* Oct. 29--Irvine Barclay Theater, 7 p.m.: Portuguese singer Misia presents the art of fado--a form of Portuguese song based on traditional melodies with lyrics taken from poetry and literature. $25 to $29. Co-presented by Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Irvine Barclay.

* Nov. 12--Orange County Museum of Art, 2 p.m.: “32 Short Films about Glenn Gould.” A film by director Francois Girard examining the life of Canadian pianist Glenn Gould and featuring the music of Bach. Free. Presented by Philharmonic Society.

* Nov. 18--Linda’s Doll Hut, 107 S. Adams St., Anaheim, 8 p.m.: “American Roadhouse II”: Blues and rock ‘n’ roll. $10, 21 and older with ID. Presented by Linda’s Doll Hut.

* Nov. 24-25--8 p.m.; Nov. 26--3 p.m., Irvine Barclay Theatre: Bale Folclorico da Bahia: “Carnival.” Co-presented by Philharmonic Society and the Irvine Barclay.
