Planting of Trees to Mark Earth Day

Volunteers will plant about 40 trees at Cal State Northridge on April 26 as part of an Earth Day celebration.

The trees will be placed outside the science buildings by about 80 volunteers.

“It’s a long-term goal for the College of Science and Math to have a wooded, shady landscape surrounding the building as an identifying feature,” CSUN Botanical Garden and Greenhouse Manager Brian Houck said. “It’s an educational tool for the students.”

Organizers chose a variety of species, including magnolias, pines, yews, Japanese cryptomeria and michelias, to give the three-acre site a forest-like look, Houck said.

“The fragrance is just out of this world--a fruity, orangy, sort of pineapple smell,” Houck said. “During the still air, it will perfume the entire courtyard between the buildings.”

The nonprofit TreePeople organization provided volunteers with instructions and tools. A sprinkler system is in the works, campus officials said.
