A surprise bailout last week by the Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation allowed Irvine Unified School District trustees to keep enriched arts, music and science programs and increased class sizes.

But in addition to the gifts, which total more than $3 million, the survival of Irvine’s programs will depend on fund-raising efforts by the Irvine Public Schools Foundation.

With $500,000 in the bank, the nonprofit organization will have to raise $1.1 million to deliver on a $1.6-million pledge made by Carolyn McInerney, the foundation’s president, at Thursday’s board meeting.

PTA Council President Marilyn Jacks said she’ll send out fund-raising letters to parents.

The foundation has about four weeks to let trustees know if the pledge can be fulfilled. Donors can soon use their credit cards to give money. The foundation also accepts stocks.
