Rideshare Honors Businesses, Individuals for Carpooling
Nearly two dozen Southland businesses and individuals have been honored during the second annual Rideshare Diamond Awards, a recognition for their efforts to promote carpooling.
“Businesses and employers play an important role in the promotion of ridesharing and alternative commuting, and it is important to acknowledge their efforts to limit the number of cars on our roads and enhance our overall air quality,” said Jim Sims, director of Southern California Rideshare.
Among the honorees for outstanding ridesharing programs in 1999 were the cities of Pasadena, Torrance and Azusa, as well as companies such as Wal-Mart, GTE California and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Two commuters were also presented with awards--Phil Aker with the city of Los Angeles, who has commuted to work by bicycle for 31 years, and Larry Wilson with Blue Shield of California, who is a longtime practicer of ridesharing.
The event, held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, was sponsored by Southern California Rideshare, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Ventura County Transportation Commission.
