FOUNTAIN VALLEY
Resident John Chavez raised about $3,100 for the Swim With Mike fund-raiser by swimming more than 200 miles--four to five miles a day--over two months. The event benefits a USC scholarship fund for physically challenged athletes.
Chavez, who has been blind for 15 years, has participated in the fund-raiser for six years and has now raised more than $13,000.
Chavez, who volunteers for the city and his church, is a student at the Braille Institute, where he and other students are organizing an employment resource center for the blind.
