A fire caused by a faulty cable in a tunnel between two Metro subway stations forced the evacuation of a train and the two stations at the height of the evening rush hour Thursday, stranding thousands of commuters and tourists.

No serious injuries were reported, but paramedics treated a dozen people for smoke inhalation as the Farragut West and Foggy Bottom stations were emptied. Passengers from the train had to walk through the smoke-filled tunnel.
