Leeds fans smashed the window of a bus carrying Galatasaray officials to Thursday’s UEFA Cup semifinal in England, a 2-2 tie that advanced the Turkish team to the championship game on 4-2 aggregate.

Galatasaray, the first Turkish team to reach a European final, will play Arsenal, which won 2-1 at Lens to advance on 3-1 aggregate. The championship is May 17 in Copenhagen.

Three buses carrying Galatasaray officials arrived at the stadium to jeers and chants of “scum” from hundreds of Leeds fans.

Galatasaray striker Hakan Sukur was struck by an object thrown by a fan toward the end of the game in which he scored his team’s second goal.

Even with Galatasaray’s fans banned from the game, there were 350 police. By game’s end, police reported 23 arrests but no other injuries.

The incidents came on a night of high tension surrounding the game following the killings of two Leeds supporters in Istanbul two weeks ago.
