Postal Service Staying at Pharmacy
Residents of east Camarillo will keep their post office.
U.S. Postal Service officials have agreed to offset the cost of running a mail outlet at Santa Rosa Pharmacy after the owner threatened to close up shop.
Pharmacy owner Jerry Pond had been receiving 6% of sales made from selling stamps and metering letters, and an additional 3% after monthly quotas were met. He had demanded a percentage increase as a condition of keeping the pharmacy post office open.
Postal officials agreed to give him an increase on his sales.
“The uproar accomplished what we asked for,” Pond said.
A meeting between Pond’s postal managers and representatives came days after Pond said he was closing the outlet, which serves residents from Leisure Village and the city’s east side.
Customers and store owners were upset by the prospect of losing the nearby location. The next closest site is about seven miles away in downtown Camarillo.
After a two-hour meeting between Pond’s outlet manager and postal workers, the group walked away with the compromise.
