DANA POINT
The City Council voted 5 to 0 to authorize a mandatory removal of nuisance weeds on private property at a meeting Tuesday.
If unruly weeds become a public safety hazard, the city has the authority to remove them, according to state law.
City Manager John B. Bahorski said the mandatory weed removal is done annually before the summer fire season. Homeowners are given an opportunity to voluntarily remove the weeds.
If the city removes the weeds, the homeowner will be charged for the services. Bahorski said increased residential development in the city has helped reduce the weed problem over the years.
