Israel unleashed a series of airstrikes on suspected guerrilla hide-outs in southern Lebanon after rebels exploded a device near an outpost of a pro-Israeli militia Friday, killing three militiamen.

An Israeli military spokesman in Jerusalem said that one militiaman was killed and four others wounded, three seriously, and that two other militiamen were buried under the rubble of the Aramta outpost. Late Friday, the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army, or SLA, said the corpses of the two militiamen had been recovered from the ruins.

Lebanese security officials earlier said four militiamen had died.

The Israeli army and SLA sources said the guerrillas had driven an explosives-laden truck into the outpost in the Israeli-occupied zone. However, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas said they had attacked twice using explosives and machine guns.
