Ceremony to Welcome Runners From Alaska
Participants on a long-distance run in support of Native American sovereignty will stop at Rancho San Cayetano’s intertribal ceremonial grounds Friday and Saturday en route to Mexico.
The public is invited to greet the dozens of runners, who left Alaska on May 1 and will meet another group of runners from Argentina near Mexico City in October.
Friday’s activities include a reception and dinner at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the day will start at 8 a.m. with a sweat lodge purification ceremony and include Aztec dancing and dinner.
Participants in the Peace & Dignity Journey 2000 are running to promote sovereignty among Native American nations. The runners from Alaska and Argentina are stopping at sites of native sacred or historical significance along the two routes.
The six-month run will end Oct. 25 at the Temples of the Sun and the Moon at the Teotihuacan pyramids north of Mexico City, where the two contingents of runners will spend several days participating in seminars and ceremonies.
The weekend’s festivities at the rancho off Young Road are free of charge.
