Decision on Location of Skate Park Delayed

The location of a $250,000 skate park here won’t be determined until the fall because of complications involving the two remaining available sites.

Oxnard Parks and Facilities Supt. Mike Henderson said Monday that the construction of the new Boys & Girls Club at Southwest Community Park and the lack of a master plan for College Park have prevented the city from naming either site as home for the skate park.

The issue of the park’s location has created tensions between park officials and some community leaders.

Members of the Sea Air Neighborhood Community group said they need to adjust to the presence of the Boys & Girls Club first before a skate park goes in next to it.

Henderson has said the West 5th Street site, near the club, would be ideal because it is centrally located and has off-street parking.

Assistant City Manager Karen Burnham said the park’s design and community concerns would be taken into account in deciding where to put the park, which will be paid for with local bonds.

Henderson said a meeting to determine a location would be held in September or October.
