Alarcon to Receive Child-Care Award

Share

State Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) will be honored at the Child Care Resource Center’s 11th annual legislative breakfast Friday.

The Child Development Policy Institute will present an award to Alarcon in recognition of his commitment to children’s issues. The institute is a nonprofit organization that lobbies in Sacramento on behalf of child development programs. Alarcon attracted the group’s attention when he introduced a child-care bill last year.

“He has been a constant voice for quality child care and he championed this issue by carrying SB68, which would require that the California Department of Education develop a master plan for the development of subsidized child care in California,” said Anne Broussard, child care coordinator for Los Angeles. “The entire child-care field would like to recognize his efforts on behalf of children and families.”

The event will also include a keynote address by Sen. Liz Figueroa (D-Fremont). Figueroa will discuss the role the Women’s Caucus played in the allocation of an additional $134 million for state child-care programs and the need for legislation to ensure that such funding continues.

The Child Care Resource Center is a 25-year-old organization dedicated to assisting low-income families with their child-care needs. The Van Nuys-based nonprofit group provides child-care subsidies, resource referral and child-care training to residents of the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.

Admission to the 8 a.m. breakfast at the Airtel Plaza Hotel is $10. The hotel is at 7277 Valjean Ave. in Van Nuys. Anyone interested in attending should call (818) 756-3360.
