Wealth and Tax Cuts

* Re “House Approves Tax Cuts for Seniors,” July 28.

That headline should have had the word “rich” before “seniors,” because the lower-income seniors get no relief from this.

Married recipients must pay taxes on their Social Security if they earn more than $32,000. The cuts proposed by the House do not help them unless they earn more than $44,000.

If they really want to give relief to seniors, Congress should have proposed it for the lower-income ones as well.

It seems that all the Republican tax cut proposals are geared for the rich and very rich rather than for all. They even call the inheritance tax a “death tax” to make it sound onerous. It’s all for show and for votes, anyway, because they’ll all be vetoed.
