Salmonella Fears Force Recall of Pig Ear Pet Treat
A distributor of natural pet treats is recalling about 300 cases of Smoked Pig Ears because of possible salmonella contamination.
BrittmoreTexas Co. Inc. of Kerrville, Texas, is recalling the treats, which were produced by North Carolina-based Carolina Prime Pets, because a federal inspection discovered salmonella in samples of the pig ears.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections in small children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. It is not considered a health risk for pets.
Pet owners can become ill by touching their mouth or food without washing their hands after handling the treats.
The pig ears were sold in cases of 100 from May to July in Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.
Customers can return the treats to the store where they were purchased for a refund.
