Designs are almost complete for two elementary schools that Santa Ana Unified School District officials hope will reduce overcrowding in several of the city’s most impacted grade schools.
The future K-3 campuses--one near the Civic Center downtown and one near Memorial Park--will draw a few thousand students from neighborhood schools when they open in about three years, district officials said.
“The sooner it gets built the better it will be for everyone involved,” said Washington Elementary School Principal Robert Anguiano, referring to the campus near Memorial Park that will be built withing walking distance of his school.
At Washington, playground space has gradually vanished as officials have added portable classrooms to hold more students.
Anguiano said he hopes the new school will allow him to remove some of his school’s 26 portables.
“Even 1,000 [students] will be a little bit more manageable than [Washington’s current population of] 1,300,” he said.
The district board is expected to approve the designs of the schools within the next few months.
