The effects-laden ‘Hollow Man” wasn’t invisible at the box office. Despite lousy reviews, the latest thrill ride from director Paul Verhoeven pulled in $26.4 million its opening weekend for a per-screen average of $8,936.

Adult audiences came out for “Space Cowboys,” starring Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, James Garner and Tommy Lee Jones. The adventure comedy came in a strong third with $18.1 million, out-grossing the $15-million opening eight years ago of Eastwood’s Oscar-winning epic “Unforgiven.”

The week’s other new release, “Coyote Ugly,” placed fourth with $17.3 million, most of that from younger audiences. Last week’s box-office champ, “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps” dropped to second place with $18.1 million, for a 10-day total of $76.7 million.
